Järva Cemetery
competition entry 2010 w/ Torsten Lockl, Lina Müller & bbz.landschaftsarchitekten

The City of Stockholm invited entries in an open competition for the design of a new cemetery between Akalla, Hjulsta and Tensta, in the open landscape of Järvafälet surrounding the artificial hill Granholmstoppen in the North of Stockholm, a landscape full of historical traces and monuments. The strategic and long-term significance of the prospective cemetery equates Skogskyrkogåden in the South of the city implemented one hundred years ago. The competition brief though asked for contemporary strategies to allow for the development of the cemetery during the next one hundred years - and recreational uses at the same time and on the same site: an existing frisbee golf course, the expansion of the public footpath and cycle track network linking the adjacent boroughs, Granholmstoppen as a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, sledgers, hang- and paragliders. The design proposed robust minimal interventions: a public foothill promenade and a fabric of low and slowly eroding walls precisely adjusted to the site, emphasizing the functional mix and the heterogenous spatial qualities of the landscape.

design team: Jens Casper, Torsten Lockl & Lina Müller as ArgeCLM w/ Matthias Grabe; in collaboration w/ bbz.landschaftsarchitekten Berlin: Timo Herrmann, Wieschen Sievers. conceptual advise and translations: Kristoffer Josefsson.
